The Flower and the bee (A Flor e a Abella) is the youngest red wine by Bodega Coto de Gomariz in Leiro (Ourense). A dry, single-varietal red wine made with Sousón. A wine with a fresh, fruity and balanced character. A wine that makes the ideal entry point for those unfamiliar with the Gomariz wines, as it expresses the characteristics of the most emblematic Ribeiro white grape; Sousón.

The grapes come from a selection of the winery's youngest vineyards in the Gomariz Valley, vines growing in the river valleys and on terraces and gentle slopes above them, with soils composed generally of sandy and alluvial over granite. The wine is organically farmed applying biodynamic principles and practising sustainable viticulture to preserve the biodiversity.

The grapes are hand-harvested, hand-selected, both in the vineyard and the cellar, and lightly pressed. Fermented with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel tanks with regular pumping over. Aged for 4 months in French oak barrels to soften the power of the Souson, and it rests for one month in the bottle before its release.

Tasting Notes:

Fruity, fresh, with notes of red and black fruits and spices. On the palate, it's juicy and fruity, with equal parts of volume and freshness, supported by subtle tannins.

THE WINERY

Coto de Gomariz takes its name after the village where it is located, "Gomariz", known, since the 10th century, as the Ribeiro's "Golden Mile". it is regarded as the oldest wine-producing region in the Iberian Peninsula and the most significant wine-growing region in Galicia, and is renowned for its ideal conditions for growing vines.

The Bodega is owned by the Carreiro family, a well-established family of viticulturists in Barro de Gomariz for many generations. The winery was founded by Ricardo Carreiro in the 70's, a Galician who had managed to return to his native homeland after emigrating to South America. The vineyards are on the slopes of the Avia River, many of which are terraced. They cultivate 32 ha of vines scattered around different parishes in the valley of the river Avis, on soils generally sandy and alluvial over granite.

Coto de Gomariz has evolved into Galicia's most avant-garde winery at the moment. They have supplemented the old, family-planted vines with new, contemporary plantings, and they were first to mature red wines in oak barrels. Since 2004, they have started focusing on ecological practises and adopting biodynamic agricultural methods.
