The first independent vintage for the Centenary Carinyena. Previously, it had been combined with a minor amount of the 1945 Carinyena. In this vintage, she has chosen to separate the two plots and produce two distinct Carinyenas to highlight the unique characteristics and exceptionality of each vineyard.
This red wine is made entirely from Carignan, sourced from centenary vines planted in very steep Costers with a 70% gradient in a much fresher area on 100% licorella soil. Old vines in "Les Solanes de Porrera", which were planted according to the Register's official documents in 1919.
Production:
The production is inferior to 400 grams per plant, and all the processes are done manually from beginning to end.
Fermentation takes place in 500-liter new French oak barrels with a long maceration of about 30 days. Afterwards, it ages in the same barrel, where it will spend 13 months. Bottled unfiltered.
Small production of 750 bottles.
Tasting Notes:
Extraordinary black-coloured, with excellent complexity and elegance all the way. Beautifully integrated notes of liquorice, species, berry fruit, and graphite pencil are combined with subtle smoky and tobacco hints. Wonderful, broad, rich, and complex, with a perfect balance of acidity and mouthfuls of berry fruit.
Note: With a good structure to age, it will improve in the cellar during the next 10–12 years.
En Números Vermells is Silvia Puig’s individual project; she is a young but very experienced winemaker with a formidable CV when it comes to winemaking and belongs to a new generation of winemakers in the Priorat. She makes amazing wines in small quantities and in a very artisanal way.
In 2008, she began her project by making just one single barrel in a small garage converted for this purpose in the village of Torroja; today, she has her own place in the village of Gratallops, where she produces the wines. All of the fruit is carefully selected from several plots staggered in Costers (a Catalán word meaning steep slopes) and terraces with soils dominated by the characteristic “llicorella” or slate in various locations around the Priorat. She cultivates some plots with very old vines, some of which are 100-year-old vines, from which she produces her signature wine, "En Numeros Vermells Centenary Carinyenas".
