Morgon "Côte du Py" is a 100% gamay red wine from old vines (some up to 100 years old), located in Côte du Py, Morgon AOC, a prestigious slope on the outskirts of the village of Villié-Morgon. The region is composed of gentle slopes where the grapes are grown in soil known as pourni (rot-ten), which is derived from volcanic sediment (basaltic rocks mixed with pyritic schist, rich in ferrour oxide and called morgons).
Winemaking:
Made using natural viticulture and vinification techniques, without the use of herbicides or pesticides, and with minimal sulphur additions.
Hand-harvested. Whole-cluster fermentation with indigenous yeasts. Cold carbonic maceration (4-7 ºC). Aged for 6 to 9 months in used oak barrels.
On this hillside of Côte du Py grows a gamay that is characterised by its finesse, and although its wines can be enjoyed while young, they also have the potential to age well for several years.
Tasting notes:
Dark garnet in colour. Aromas of red fruit, raspberry, and kirsch, flowers, and spices. The palate is fresh, with depth, complexity, and velvety texture. Marked tannins, good acidity, and a long, warm finish.
Domaine Jean Foillard is a family-run winery in the Beaujolais Cru of Morgon. Founded in the 1980s by Jean Foillard, who took over the estate from his father. The majority of the 14 hectares of vines on the estate are found on the Côte du Py slope
All the wines are made from the native Gamay grape variety sourced from old vines, over 40 years old and some up to 100 years old and grown on granite and schist soils.
Foillard reinvindicates the traditional way of winemaking with minimal intervention using organic viticulture and traditional vinification techniques, no herbicides or pesticides, and minimal sulphur additions. Their wines are characterised by their depth and complexity, and they also have the potential to age well for several years.
